Graduate Color Workshop II
Taking inspiration from nature to apply colors to a product.
The product can be a simple, single piece product or made of multiple pieces which assemble together. Often, use of details such living-hinges can decrease number of parts in the design, if appropriate and advantageous for the product.
It must 1) pass the “Useful and/or Entertaining” test, and 2) must be designed appropriately and suitably for mass-production via injection-molding manufacturing methods.
Whereas traditional products are static in nature, modern products frequently make use of dynamic and interactive capabilities to become more useful, entertaining, or both.
Some standard elements to consider for dynamic interaction include, but are not limited to: Light, Sound, and Movement. Controlling these elements can be done primarily via electronic means, and in some less frequent cases, through analog means.
The product can be practical, conceptual, artistic, or any of the combination.
The second way of delivery should make use of the light as an integral component of the product’s interaction with the user. The light should be triggered by meaningful and/or interesting action or behavior of the user. In addition to illumination, the resulting light delivered can serve as a signal, indicator, display, or as any other meaningful and/or entertaining phenomenon.
For this exercise, student must design two ways of providing electrical light to the user.
Deliver the light as a fixture, using standard electrical bulb and switches, for illumination purposes. The lighting fixture can be one of the following: Table Lamp, Pendant Lamp, or Floor Lamp.
The fixture must use an energy efficient light source(either fluorescent or LED). The fixture will need to utilize materials such as paper, glass, plastic, or others which can reflect, concentrate, or diffuse light in useful and effective manner.
Manufacturing Technique: Metal sand-casting
Design a garden trowel for use for use in urban, suburban, or rural gardens, with accompanying accessories and retail packaging. The trowel is to be manufactured by the metal sand-casting process. The handle and blade must be connected in one continuous piece. NO OTHER material may be used in manufacturing the trowel.
